Ankle-Foot Orthosis Spring

Korall Engineering is developing an automated workflow application for the additive productionof ankle-foot orthosis springs (AFOs). In collaboration with its customer, an internationalmedical company, Korall Engineering is working on digitalizing the conventional manufacturingof such medical devices in order to achieve its goal.

Such an application will allow the end-user to input the data of the patient in need of an AFOand receive a digital file of the design they require. Such a design file will be then sent to a3D-printer, allowing the end-user to print on-demand, avoiding hours of manpower andmanual production, and reducing costs and material waste.

In order to develop the automated workflow application, Korall Engineering has explored thedifferent material options in terms of biocompatibility, flexibility, and durability, re-designedthe AFOs in order to fit the additive manufacturing process, digitalized the conventionalproduction process, and finally built the framework for the overall digital application.
